The Importance Of Realistic Goals

A couple months ago, I started working on a marketing program for one of my fun blogs (even though it is a fun blog, I still like traffic). This included contributing to ezines. I did a bit of research before hand. Over and over I heard that it takes about 100 contributions to an ezine to start to see some real traffic.

Fine, I said. I’ll employ this marketing tactic until the 100th article point and then evaluate. Writing two a week, that’ll take me about a year (all I have is time).

I wrote this down and scheduled the articles into my to-do list.

After the first month and 8 articles, I saw almost no results. Maybe one or two new readers. I started getting discouraged. Was I wasting my time? Giving away content (but then if I have no readers, what am I giving away?)?

But before taking action, I looked back over my reasons for contributing in the first place. And there it was in bold, test for ONE YEAR. Yikes, I couldn’t quit after one month, could I?

Thank goodness I didn’t because two months later and I’m starting to see an increase in readers. Other sites have picked up my articles. The inbound links are multiplying like rabbits (we raised rabbits on our recreational farm growing up, they really do reproduce rapidly). The strategy is working.

Realistic goals can save you from quitting a project too early or selling a stock too quickly.

I think that I'm guilty of giving up on things too early. Trying to figure out ahead of time how long something typically takes is a great idea.
