I’m a Jeffrey J. Fox fan. I loved, loved, loved his rainmaker series (Secrets of Great Rainmakers, How To Become A Rainmaker) and of course, his book How To Become A Marketing Superstar. So I was pleased… no, excited to pick up his latest book How To Get To The Top.
I enjoyed his homage to Moms, saying that basically everything you need to know about running a successful company can be learned by watching a Mom of a prospering family.
“As CEO of their families, moms do more tasks, make more decisions, solve more problems, deal with more crises in one week than even the hardest-working, most hands-on corporate CEO will handle in a Galapagos tortoise’s lifetime.”
I agreed with his stance on how every child should work (I’ve worked since I could walk solo). The “earlier the kid starts working, the earlier the kid starts to learn what he or she will need to know to be successful.” “All work and no play make Jack a dull boy, but no work and all play keep Jack a boy.”
If you look at the biographies of all the great leaders, great investors, great businesspeople, you’ll find summer jobs, after school jobs, projects that kept the future star busy (as my Mom always says, “if your child is bright and bored, he will get into trouble” – kids with jobs are rarely bored).
Another favorite chapter (of many) is Teach Your Girls To Whistle. “Teaching your girls to whistle teaches them it is okay to be different, to be unconventional. Teaching your girls when to whistle teaches them independence and self-reliance. Teaching a girl to whistle teaches confidence.”
And confidence is a key requirement for success.
While his other books had more specific examples, I find How To Get To The Top more geared towards families. I got enough ideas out of the book to warrant the price (so a positive return on investment).
