Fast Track Girl : NAWBO

Fast Track Girl:

NAWBO - National Association of Women Business Owners

I found a tiny little article in the business section of the newspaper (yup, still reading it just like RK says to, been doing it for 4 years now) that was about the NAWBO mentor program. I called the number in the article and inquired about the program. They emailed me an application that asked information about me, my business, how long I'd been in business, skills I gained from my business, what I needed help with and what I hope to gain if selected to be a mentee. I faxed the application back and didn't hear anything for over a month.

Then I got an email stating someone would be contacting me and shortly after I got a call informing me I had been selected as a mentee. I was given a brief summary of the program and was asked if I could commit to it and was still interested. My mentor was to contact me prior to the Kick Off Meeting the following week.

My mentor Georgianne called and it turned out she's a new business owner herself but has a long history of working in business management. She owns an insurance business. We hit it off right away and chatted for an hour.

The Kick Off was with a group of 20 women, along with several group leaders. WOW....what an accumulative amount of business experience! This is going to be awesome! Georgianne is great!

Evidently, we were all emailed a personality profile assessment that was to be completed and assessed prior to that meeting, which much of the time was spent with a lecture on how your style affects how you behave and interact with others in business. Also, it addressed how your style may be the same, similar, or opposite of your mentor/mentee and how to work around that, so it's not counterproductive. I didn't get that email, so I didn't take the test. I think I know what the outcome will be though and took notes about the styles I think I am. When I take the test I'll post about the outcome.

The program is nearly a year long and we meet once a month in a lecture/workshop meeting. We talk with and meet with our mentor throughout the month, while working on specific homework assignments. This months assignment is a workbook called The One Page Business Plan by Jim Horan. It's been on Amazon's best selling list for several years. I'll be calling Georgianne tomorrow to make an appointment to meet and go over the workbook. The goal is to have worked on the assignment prior to the next meeting the third week of November when the author is going to meet with us via conference phone at that meeting.

This is a very upbeat energized positive group of women and I can't wait to get to know them better! Also, you get a free listing/ad of your business in their directory, which normally costs a fee. I'll keep posting about my mentee experience as it happens.

My holiday cart is now open for business. I'll post about that later but I'm extremely busy all of a sudden, so bare with me if it takes me a while to post.

Amy:

We're pleased that you're doing a NAWBO mentoring program. Are you working with National NAWBO or a local chapter? Keep up the good work.
