Adding To The Stock Watch List: Dreaming, Dreaming Is Free

I’ve already covered many of my big bucket criteria of what I look for in a stock (thinly traded, dividend paying, not sexy, under valued, etc) but how do I find the stocks to investigate?

I look into products, I use every day, sure, but I also listen to the talking heads (those financial guys talking stocks up on the boob tube, yep, they’re good for something). I don’t buy when they say buy or sell when they say sell necessarily (okay, not often). I listen for names, names that might, just might, meet my criteria.

Ironically these stocks are usually overpriced at the time they’re mentioned. The talking heads, you see, are trying to get viewers and viewers like to hear about the hot sectors. The hip stocks. The trendy stocks. The sexy stocks. It was tech (ouch) then real estate (ouch) now oil and gas (ouch to be). Everyone and their mom are buying these stocks and because everyone’s buying them, they’re expensive.

Too expensive for this frugal Friday woman. I put them on my stock watch list. I add to my knowledge by using the excess of information floating around (like my grandma used to say…making hay while the sun shines) ‘cause I know that when the herd moves onto the next “hot” investment, there won’t be as much coverage (it’ll be like these companies disappeared off the face of the earth…equivalent to those poor stranded folks in Lost).

And I wait. When everyone moves on, the prices could very well drop to the levels I wish to invest at. You might say that I’m the pooper scooper of the investment world (like those folks following the horses in parades).
